Former Republican Gov. Gary Johnson Endorses Initiative to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol as Campaign Submits Additional Signatures to Qualify for the November Ballot

Campaign submits 12,000+ signatures just 2,400 are needed

FEBRUARY 17 – DENVER – Proponents of a statewide initiative to regulate marijuana like alcohol have submitted more than 12,000 additional signatures to cure its petition to place a measure on the November ballot. Just over 2,400 additional valid signatures are needed.

Prior to submitting its completed petition to the Secretary of State's Office, the Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol held a news conference at which former two-term Republican governor of New Mexico Gary Johnson endorsed the initiative and discussed why he supports ending marijuana prohibition and regulating it like alcohol. In particular, he discussed his belief -- based on his personal experience -- that marijuana is far less harmful than alcohol. He also highlighted the importance of the Colorado initiative at the national level, telling Denver's NBC affiliate station:

"Coloradans have the chance to end marijuana prohibition for the entire country. There has to be a first, and Colorado has that opportunity. The more people talk about this, the more people understand this, the better the chance is for [marijuana prohibition] to end."
