Denver Post column: Pot makes strange bedfellows

This weekend's Denver Post included a fun column from staff writer Mike Littwin, "Pot makes strange bedfellows," in which he voices support for Amendment 64 through the lens of Pat Robertson's recent and unexpected endorsement of the initiative.

[M]aybe we've come a long way if Robertson, of all people, is now speaking in support of a legalization initiative on the ballot here in Colorado.

In particular, Littwin discusses how different he and the conservative evangelist are when it comes to their views on just about every other issue. He even goes so far as to lament Robertson's decision to refrain from getting more involved in the campaign.

Unfortunately, he told The New York Times that he wouldn't actively campaign.

"I'm not a crusader," he explained.

Too bad, because it's high time for this fight.

The Post columnist also ties in another "strange bedfellow," U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo, who came out in support of ending marijuana prohibition in 2010. Whereas Robertson told the New York Times that he "absolutely" supports the initiative to regulate marijuana like alcohol in Colorado, Tancredo has yet to join him and Littwin in specifically voicing support for Amendment 64, but perhaps that will change.

Overall, this column is a testament to the broad spectrum of support for ending marijuana prohibition. It shows voters that regardless of their political persuasion, there are people on the "other side" who agree with them. We have little doubt there will be more strange bedfellows jumping into the "Yes on 64" bed, and with any luck, we'll continue to read about them in columns like this one.
